We are good at reading weather. We are good at discerning things around us that matter. Notice again as we've seen in chapter 12 the concept of "worry" comes to light. Jesus has said not to worry about the material things but to keep their eyes focused on the spiritual. In other words - there are things to be concerned about - the right things.
Verse 57 following is just a picture of how getting focused on the material keeps God and spiritual things out of focus. We can be so wrapped up in being right and keeping our own that we end up in jail but the times are too significant to worry about petty matters and even whose loosing money. As Paul says, in I Corinthians 6:7 "why not be wronged." Sometimes we can be right but in the process of proving it we win the battle and loose the war.
There are times when our "right or wrong" doesn't matter. Could you imagine pulling up on the scene of an accident and 2 paramedics are arguing how to unload the stretcher. The guy laying there dying probably doesn't care! Many times we are worried and distracted by petty things in comparison to the kingdom of God.
Read II Timothy 2:2-7. - "civilian affairs."
questions
1) what quarrels or arguments have you had in the last month or so that looking back now were just foolishness?
2) Look back over ch. 12 of Luke what principles can help us from loosing our focus?
3) What is the big picture God wants you to be focusing on right now? What plan is he working around you? How is he setting up the kingdom and inviting you to join him? If you don't know spend some time this week/ weekend seeking him.
Pray and ask, "Lord I know I get distracted sometimes. Would you speak to my heart and bring to my mind what it is you want me to be focused on right now. Would yo lead me to the scriptures that I need to be living out the most.
