The disciples can't set the boy free and in reality neither can we set people free. The power of Jesus can and this passage demonstrates that if we are powerless in our lives we simply need more of Jesus presence. Jesus came to set up his kingdom and in the next chapter we'll see His disciples following his example as they go and cast out demons (10:17). They are struggling here because of their lack of faith which needs to be demonstrated by their prayer and fasting. Matthew 17, Mark 9)
Jesus has the amazing ability to do these great feats as he demonstrates his power but he doesn't loose his focus. The last few verses show how he knows who he is and what his purpose is all about. He can see the important details of this boy's condition and the big picture of dying for all the world.
In Marks account of this story the boy's father is recorder asking Jesus, "could you help my son?" Jesus responds, "Can I?" "Where's your faith?" The father replies, "I do believe help me overcome my disbelief."
questions
1) What might a father in this situation be feeling?
2) Are you more of a big picture person or do you get lost in the details at times? How can keeping God's big picture for your life - help you this week? (Your big picture is the same as Jesus' - to die more to self and follow God more passionately)
3) Jesus' own disciples struggle here to cast out the demon but in the next chapter they don't seem to have any trouble. What demons need to be casted out of your life that may simply need a bit more faith - demonstrated by fasting and prayer?
