Wednesday Devo

Read Luke 7:36-50. I'm so amazed at how Jesus just seemed to go where he was invited. I think of doing ministry as strategic planning. The best stuff comes from highly organized events - detailed programs running off of the latest methods. Jesus' best stuff that really changed people's lives was simply saying "yes" to a dinner invitation. He just went were life carried him and turned everyday moments into life changing experiences!

I also love the fact that Jesus looks at this woman for who she can be - not who she has been. It would be really easy to think she is just having an emotional moment. Like a decision for Christ at church camp or something - it can't be based on true faith with all this emotion involved. It might have been easy to think - she's just doing this for a show - why here - why now to wash Jesus feet in front of all these people. Like those annoying people who raise their hands in worship - it must just be for show right. This woman doesn't care who sees her worship. She doesn't care what anyone thinks. She is radically in love with Jesus!

Jesus sees her heart - he knows her faith. Simon's own fearfulness and insecurity leads him to judge. He can't see what this woman can be - he has no hope for her. He simply defines her by her past.

questions
1) What are some of the routine, everyday experiences you have in life right now where God may be looking to break in and do amazing things?
2) Who in your life have you lost hope for? Whom are you tempted to think is beyond God's grasp?
3) Where are you afraid to let your worship show? If you were radically open to God and passionately in love with him - how might it be displayed more boldly? Not to be seen by men but simply because you couldn't contain it!

prayer
Lord teach us to love like this woman. Teach us to be so in love with you we don't care what those around us think. Teach us to bring expensive gifts and dump them at your feet. Teach us to boldly let our light shine - to be a city on a hill that cannot be hidden!
